[00:00:01] Show announcer: Welcome to the Picture of Wealth, a podcast all about living more of your life now yet being responsible for your future. Lifestyle experimenter, wealth scientist, and financial coach, Dustin Service, shares life hacks, wealth tips, and interviews successful entrepreneurs on how they're thriving in happiness, purpose, and prosperity.
[00:00:23] Dustin Serviss: What a perfect episode to kick off twenty twenty two on goal setting. I take this quote from mind beacon dot com. Thank you. Many of us are living with unprecedented amount of uncertainty in our daily lives right now. We don't know when we'll be able to see our friends and family again or when our work life will return to normal. Some of us are stuck in childcare or home situations that feel unsustainable, and we worry about ourselves and our loved ones who may be more vulnerable to the c word. To a large extent, we've lost control over parts of our lives that we previously took for granted.
[00:00:56] Dustin Serviss: On top of that, we've been asked to give up pleasures, big, small, picnics with friends, visiting relatives, or a vacation to Italy that we've been looking forward to for over a year. It's normal to feel frustrated, powerless, and anxious given the current circumstances. One way to cope with these feelings is to focus on the small things over which we do have control. We can commit to taking small concrete actions each week to regain a sense of purpose and self efficacy. Now this is, you know, going back to my interpretation of this. I've used all the different goal setting techniques over the years, and guess what? They all work.
[00:01:32] Dustin Serviss: If it got me to write something down, it works. The two ways I have set goals in the past that had the highest level of success or the biggest push in myself, I will outline here. The first one, I came across an old speech from two thousand nine when I attended an event down south. Now the speaker whose name was Kenichi Ibuki identifies this as the five w's and three h method. And you guys will all know where this is going. What what is important to me in my life? Why? When the world is confused, it is important to know which direction I'm headed toward. When? When do I start? Where? Where is my market? Where is my opportunity?
[00:02:21] Dustin Serviss: Where is my passion? For you, this could be, where are the resources to help me accomplish x goal? Where are the partners that could help you? Who? Who am I? How? How do I want my future to be? What should I keep? What needs to be added? What needs to be retired? As in maybe old beliefs, old cheat sheets, old checklists, old patterns you picked up hot. Can I be enthusiastic about it? How much will it cost me? Anything I need to invest in to get me closer to this goal? Maybe dollars may require time may require sacrifice, may cost relationships. That summary is an easy way to help you get your mind
[00:03:11] Dustin Serviss: going with the juices and get the get the mind working to help you see clear on where you wanna go. The second take... The second technique was when I came across a top life insurance salesman named Sandro Forte. If you're listening, thank you. He was way back in early in my career. He's from the UK. I looked him up. I thought, you know, if he's doing these great things, I'm gonna phone him. I reached out to him on the phone. Again, he was across the Atlantic Ocean. He shared with me something called mind changer, and here's how it works. I will shepherd... I'll share a couple of my own examples that I just did over the past month.
[00:03:43] Dustin Serviss: As I did this in two thousand ten, and I look back out of fifteen mind changers, there's only four that I have not accomplished yet. Here's how a mind changer works. You are putting yourself in the future, in a setting, applying emotion and feeling to the setting and addressing the goal. Here's one of mine. The sunshine warms my body sitting beside our pool. Hey, Joad. Can you grab me a smoothie? Here's the second one. Waking up knowing we are mortgage free has opened up a whole new level of giving. And finally, one more example off my list that's a little more fun. The throttle snap feels so good when I crack this Harley out
[00:04:28] Dustin Serviss: of my driveway headed to my Kelowna meeting. Now, again, these mind changers are... They take a bit of work, but I can tell you that it works.
