[00:00:01] Show announcer: Welcome to the Picture of Wealth, a podcast all about living more of your life now yet being responsible for your future. Lifestyle experimenter, wealth scientist, and financial coach, Dustin Service, shares life hacks, wealth tips, and interviews successful entrepreneurs on how they're thriving in happiness, purpose, and prosperity.
[00:00:23] Dustin Serviss: Beanie or a full face helmet? For a long time, I've prided myself on wearing a full face helmet, and I've owned multiple street bikes, various Harley's, dirt bikes. And I come across the other day an old photo of myself in Sturgis, South Dakota two thousand and three, nearly twenty years ago. Now the picture description is this, I'm on a borrowed chopper. So you... In that time, you could not even have to rent it. You could borrow these choppers to test drive them if you wanted to buy them. So I'm on a about a forty thousand dollar at that time chopper. It's about twelve feet long. I've got no helmet.
[00:01:00] Dustin Serviss: I'm in flip flops and I'm cruising down the freeway at probably about eighty miles an hour. Now it feels like it was yesterday and everyone there wasn't wearing helmets and not, it was a sense of, you know, it's okay. It must be safer down here in South Dakota with these five hundred thousand bikers, but I'm not sure, you know, if they were as good a riders as me again, I was in my twenties. So was I really that good or just felt like I was a good rider? In some states, in the states, wearing a helmet is not law. So everything was fine, you know, on the trip, and we rode safe and sober, and we got, you know, home.
[00:01:38] Dustin Serviss: But I see parallels in this picture in life and money. Now the the financial industry touts if you don't have a financial plan, you're not going to be successful financially. You'll be unhappy, insignificant, lack purpose. Similar to how one might view if you don't wear a helmet, you're gonna die or become very injured. Now don't take my words and turn them. My stats, you know, I've always had is wear a helmet when riding a motorcycle because, you know, there's ample enough proof that it saves lives and it's the law in Canada. But the reality is if you are a successful business owner and you know
[00:02:10] Dustin Serviss: how to generate cash in a business and your business is, you know, a hard to live without business, hard to compete with, and you have some secret sauce that makes it hard to replicate. Well, that is actually a solid plan in itself. Now, yes, you know, I could argue with you that you should diversify in stocks and bonds and real estate, but likely, you know, if if you continue working hard at your business and you understand it every year, you get better at it, you crank out the cash flow. And if you spent that energy trying to research stocks and, you know, buying
[00:02:39] Dustin Serviss: different investments, you could spend that energy diversifying your business, maybe making it more resilient. Now, you know, what what about the risks that, you know, you're missing, you know, the the finest and most rewarding years of your life and, you know, oh, if I don't save enough and I don't build up enough savings, you know, what if I, you know, if I build my company and hopefully I sell it for a lot and retire with cash, then I'll be happy in retirement. You know, what does happy mean to you? Family time, solo time, creative time, free time, lots of money, lots of real estate, lots of stuff.
[00:03:15] Dustin Serviss: Are you currently clear on what makes you happy? And how much time have you spent exploring, under the guidance of a professional, what things make you happy? If you don't take the time to reflect, you may be able to be happy, I'll say happier, or happy per your requirements now, yet you just can't see it. Now bring it back to my analogy of the beanie and the full face. The beanie is proven to be not as effective as a full face in protecting the rider. Yet the beanie slash no helmet feels so good, especially in a group setting where everyone's doing it. The beanie is for pure looks and creating that image to the world
[00:04:00] Dustin Serviss: and for yourself, you are a certain person. People can see your face and, you know, they will look at you. They always do. But when that dad and his family looks over at you from the passenger seat and he gives you the nod, you think, wow, I'm in my beanie. I have wealth. He's driving in his Camry and he's the passenger, and that feels good. The full face, on the other hand, won't show your face. With the visor down, no one knows who you are. And the reality is with the beanie or the full face, no one cares who you are. They all have their own lives to worry about. So logically, my mind says, why wouldn't everyone wear a full face?
[00:04:41] Dustin Serviss: Let go of the image and experience the ride for what it is. Clutch in, a little throttle, clutch out, more throttle, shift, repeat until cruising speed. No one can argue that happiness will be easier to see in a beanie, but from the experience, I can get to happiness much faster at a full face. And I will look a lot younger when I get there. Oh, and if you wear a beanie, make sure you apply chemical free sunscreen.
