[00:00:00] Dustin Serviss: I wanna take you inside something called EDM or electric dance music and have a little listen. Listener, I'm not sure what that invoked an emotion for you, but there's a sense of uplifting and energy associated with it. And I recently listened to or watched the I am Tim Avicii artist documentary on Netflix, and it's about the third time I've watched it in the last couple years. But I wanna read something that I wrote for you as it applies to how I saw the movie and what sorta happened to Tim, who is Avicii. Here it is.
[00:01:09] Narration: There's a strange moment that happens in almost every ambitious person's life. You finally reach something you once dreamed about, a level of success, a business milestone, a moment where you pause and realize this is actually working. The clients are coming. The revenue is real. The thing you built in your head has materialized in the world. And instead of that moment being the end of the journey, what if it's actually the beginning of a deeper one? Because the real goal of success was never the achievement itself. It was always the freedom that achievement could create. Freedom of time, freedom of movement, freedom to live life deliberately
[00:01:48] Narration: instead of reactively. And that question, what success actually gives you becomes more important the further you go. I recently watched the Avicii documentary, I am Tim. If you've listened to his music, you know the feeling it creates. Energy, lift, momentum, songs that feel like possibility, millions of people around the world dancing to music that started as ideas inside one young man sitting alone in a studio. But what struck me watching the documentary wasn't the scale of the success. It was how deeply Tim Bergling cared about the process of creating. He wasn't chasing fame.
[00:02:25] Narration: He was chasing the moment when something in your head becomes something real. The moment where sound turns into emotion. The moment where an idea becomes a shared human experience. And that's where entrepreneurs and creators are actually very similar. Because the real joy of building something isn't the applause. It's the creation. It's the process of turning imagination into reality. Most people don't start businesses because they want more pressure. They start businesses because they want more possibility. The possibility to design their time, to create something meaningful, to build a life where work and purpose start to align,
[00:03:08] Narration: where the energy you put into the world comes back in the form of opportunity. But along the journey something subtle happens. Success can start moving faster than intention. The business grows. The team grows. The expectations grow. And if you're not careful, the thing you created for freedom can slowly begin to control your time. Not because success is bad, but because success grows faster than clarity. And when growth outruns intention, the system begins to design your life instead of the other way around. Here's the insight that's been sitting with me lately. Success isn't dangerous because it works.
[00:03:50] Narration: Success is powerful because it gives you options, but only if you design it intentionally. Every business creates a lifestyle. Some create constant urgency, some create scale, some create stability, some create time, And the real skill of entrepreneurship isn't simply building something that works, it's building something that works for your life because eventually every system you build starts shaping your days if you listen carefully to Avicii's music. There's always a moment where the melody lifts. A moment where everything opens up. That feeling matters. Because creativity has the power to expand people, to give them energy,
[00:04:32] Narration: to connect strangers in the same emotional moment. And the lesson in his story isn't that success is dangerous. The lesson is that success needs direction. When creativity and life are aligned, success becomes expansion. Most entrepreneurs ask one question, how do I make this work? But there's a better question, what kind of life does this create? Because every system you build eventually builds your schedule. Every business model shapes how you spend your days. Every success creates a structure around you. And if you design that structure intentionally, success becomes leverage not pressure.
[00:05:13] Narration: One of the things I've been experimenting with in my own life is this idea. What if success isn't about building bigger things but building things that create more energy? Projects that expand your curiosity? Experiences that connect you with people who challenge you? Businesses that allow you to live the life you want while building them. Because the real currency of success isn't revenue, it's optionality. The ability to choose how you spend your time. So here's the thought I'll leave you with today: When the thing you're building finally works, does it give you more life? More freedom? More connection?
[00:05:55] Narration: Because when success is designed well, it doesn't trap you, it expands you. The real goal of entrepreneurship isn't just to build something valuable, it's to build something that allows you to live a life that feels alive. And if you get that right, success doesn't close doors. It opens new ones you never imagined.
[00:06:16] Dustin Serviss: Now listener, if the first six minutes got your attention and you're still wondering, I just don't get it. I wanna know how. I wanna take a step. Before I get to my destination, before I get off this treadmill. I wanna do something now. I gave you four minutes on the last half of this podcast with real steps on how to do it. So enjoy the musical interlude, and after that we'll get right into the steps.
[00:06:58] Narration: Before you go today, I want to leave you with three thinking tools. Not theories, not frameworks you have to go study for six months. Just three ways of thinking that can immediately help you start designing success instead of reacting to it. And if what we talked about today resonated with you, if part of you feels like the business you built is running faster than the life you want, these three ideas will help you recalibrate. The first one comes from Dan Sullivan. It's called the four c's. Commitment, courage, capability, confidence. Here's the way it works. Every meaningful shift in your life starts with commitment, not clarity.
[00:07:42] Narration: Commitment. You decide you're going to move towards something even if you don't know exactly how it will work yet. Once you commit, the next thing that shows up is courage because the moment you step into the unknown, your brain starts asking all the questions. What if it fails? What if I'm wrong? What if people think I'm crazy? That's the courage stage. But once you stay in motion long enough, something interesting happens. You start building capability. You learn things you couldn't have learned before. You meet people you wouldn't have met. You develop skills that only come from movement and eventually capability turns into confidence.
[00:08:18] Narration: Not fake confidence, real confidence because now you've actually done things that once felt uncertain. So if you're feeling stuck right now, here's the simple question to ask yourself, where am I waiting for confidence? When what I actually need is commitment. Sometimes the shift you're looking for begins the moment you decide to move. The second thinking tool is what I call the and mindset. Entrepreneurs often fall into the trap of thinking life is a series of trade offs. I can build the business or spend time with my family. I can grow the company or take care of my health. I can pursue success or enjoy life.
[00:08:58] Narration: But some of the most powerful breakthroughs happen when you replace or with and. What would it look like to build a business and live a full life? To create wealth and have meaningful relationships? To grow something meaningful and design a lifestyle that actually energizes you? The moment you start asking better questions, your brain starts looking for new solutions. And often the constraints we think are permanent are actually just habits of thinking. And the third tool might sound a little unconventional but it's something many builders eventually discover. Sometimes you have to trust the next step before you fully understand it.
[00:09:39] Narration: Call it intuition. Call it instinct. Call it faith. But if you've been building things long enough, you know this feeling. There are moments where logic can only take you so far, and the next step requires a little belief, not blind belief, but the kind that says I don't have the whole map yet, but I know the direction. Entrepreneurs who create meaningful lives don't wait until everything is certain. They move when the direction feels right. And the strange thing about life is that once you start moving, new paths tend to appear. So wherever you are right now, in your business, in your life, in your thinking, remember this.
[00:10:19] Narration: Commit before you feel ready. Ask better questions. And trust that the next step will reveal itself once you start walking. Because success isn't just something you build. It's something you design. One intentional step at a time.
